How do I know when to drop to 2 naps? 7.5 months

My son is 7.5 months and currently on 3 naps but the third nap (late afternoon, around 4pm) has become a total battle. He fights it for 30 min and if he does take it, bedtime gets pushed way too late.

Is he ready to drop to 2 naps? He'd be awake almost 4 hours before bed if we cut it and that feels like a lot. How did you transition?

Sounds textbook ready for the 2 nap transition! The fighting-the-third-nap-and-wrecking-bedtime combo is THE classic sign. We bridged it by doing an early bedtime on the days the third nap was short or skipped. Like 6pm bedtime to cover the gap.

We dropped the third nap around 7.5 months too. The 4 hour final wake window felt scary but an earlier bedtime made it work. First week was bumpy, he was a bit overtired by dinner, but his two naps lengthened to compensate within about 10 days.

Don't go all in at once if you're nervous. We did a gradual cap, capped the morning and afternoon naps slightly shorter so he'd still take a tiny third one for a week, then dropped it. Watch for overtired night wakings as your signal you went too fast.

One thing to check, is the third nap battle or are the first two too long/too early? Sometimes shifting the morning nap later fixes the whole day. But at 7.5 months with bedtime getting pushed, it really does sound like 2 naps time.
