Lost dummy at 3am, the eternal cycle, 7 months

Every. Single. Night. My 7 month old wakes 3-4 times because his dummy fell out and he can't find it, screams until I come stick it back in, then immediately back to sleep. Rinse repeat. It's not really crying-crying, just the dummy.
Do I drop the dummy entirely or wait for him to learn to find it himself? I'm doing zombie laps to the cot all night and I'm losing my mind.

Around 7-8 months they develop the dexterity to find and replace it themselves, you're right on the cusp. What helped us: scatter a few dummies in the cot (no clips/strings, just loose dummies on the firm mattress) so his hand finds one easily. Game changer within a week.

We did 'dummy training' during the day, handing it to him to put in his own mouth, putting it in his hand near his face. Sounds silly but he learned to self-insert within about 10 days and the night laps stopped. Worth a try before going cold turkey.

Honestly we just ripped the plaster off and dropped it. Two rough-ish nights and then he slept through because there was nothing to fall out. If the dummy is ONLY waking him and not soothing for anything else, dropping it might be less painful than you fear.

The multiple-dummies-in-the-cot trick saved my sanity, just make sure they're the only thing in there, no toys, blankets, or attachments. By 7.5 months mine could find one in the dark and pop it in himself. Hold out a couple more weeks, the dexterity is coming.

Came to commiserate, the 'dummy run' is a recognized form of parental torture haha. We waited it out and around 8 months he just... figured it out and started doing it himself. If you can survive a few more weeks it may resolve on its own.
