8 month old waking every 2 hours again, used to sleep through

I'm so confused and tired. My daughter slept 7pm-6am from about 5 months. Now at 8 months she's suddenly up every 2 hours, standing in her cot crying, and only settles when I pick her up. Nothing changed in her routine.
Is this a regression? A milestone? Teething? I genuinely can't tell and the every-2-hours thing is breaking me. Last night I was up 5 times.

8 months is HUGE for development, crawling, pulling to stand, separation anxiety all hitting at once. The standing up in the cot is a clue, they literally practice the new skill in their sleep. Lots of floor practice during the day genuinely helped ours get it out of their system.

Separation anxiety peaks around now and it's real. The 'only settles when picked up' is classic. We did a lot of reassurance but tried to keep it boring and brief, hand on chest, few words, lay them back down, rather than full pick-up when we could.

Could be teething too, hard to tell. If she seems in pain, drooling, gnawing, a check with your GP or pediatrician about comfort options is worth it, but I won't suggest any meds. For us it was 90% the milestone/separation combo and it passed in about 3 weeks.

Solidarity, the regression after months of good sleep is a special kind of cruel because you forgot how to function on no sleep. It IS usually temporary. Try to hold your routine steady and resist starting brand new habits you'll have to undo later.

Original poster here with an update a week later: it was the pulling-to-stand milestone for us. Once she mastered standing AND sitting back down on her own (she'd get stuck standing and cry), the night wakings dropped right back down. Tons of practice during the day was the key. Hang in there.
