Going back to work in 3 weeks and I'm dreading the night shifts

Maternity leave ends in three weeks and my 7 month old still wakes twice a night. My partner and I both work full-time and I genuinely don't know how we're going to function.

How did you split nights with a partner who also has a demanding job? Do you alternate nights, alternate wake-ups, sleep in separate rooms? Looking for real logistics, not just 'it'll be fine'.

We split the night into shifts. I took anything before 1am, my husband took after. Whoever was 'on' slept in the spare room with the monitor so the off-duty parent got an uninterrupted block. That guaranteed block saved our marriage honestly.

Alternate whole nights worked better for us than splitting. One person is fully wrecked one day but gets a real recovery night the next. Splitting every wake-up just meant we were both half-dead constantly.

Real talk: weaponize the weekend for catch-up sleep and lower every other standard for a while. Convenience food, messy house, whatever. The night-waking phase ends. The job will survive a few foggy weeks.

Separate rooms during the week, no guilt. We reconnect on weekends. It feels unromantic but being rested made us nicer to each other. Also worth seeing if either job has any flex on start times in the early weeks back.

Whatever split you pick, write it down and stick to it so there's no 3am argument about whose turn it is. The resentment of 'I did the last one' is what kills you. A clear schedule removes the negotiation.
