Reflux baby - is it normal he only sleeps upright on me?

My 3 month old has reflux and the only way he sleeps without arching and screaming is upright on my chest. The second I lay him flat in the cot he's miserable within minutes.
I've read you absolutely shouldn't prop the mattress or use those inclined sleepers. So what are reflux parents actually supposed to do? I'm terrified of doing something unsafe but also haven't slept properly in weeks.

Please do mention this to your GP or pediatrician, reflux that's affecting sleep and feeding this much is worth getting properly assessed rather than managing alone. They helped us figure out what was going on and it made a huge difference.

You're right to avoid inclined sleepers and propping, those have been linked to real dangers. Flat on the back in the cot is the safe answer even though it feels counterintuitive with reflux. Definitely a conversation for your doctor though.

We held ours upright for 20-30 minutes after every feed before laying him down flat, and kept feeds smaller and more frequent. It helped a lot but the reflux itself really needed the pediatrician's input, don't try to tough it out.

The contact napping survival phase is real and you're not failing. Trade off with your partner so each of you gets a stretch of sleep while the other holds him. Get the medical side checked, it does get better as their systems mature.
