Wakes at 4:50am every day demanding a feed, 6 months

My son is 6 months and like clockwork wakes at 4:50am wanting to nurse. He takes a full feed and goes back down till 7. The rest of the night he sleeps great, 7pm to 4:50. I don't mind a feed but I'm starting to wonder if it's habit vs real hunger at this point.
Is 4:50 a true feed at 6 months or have we built a habit? How would I even tell?

At 6 months one early-morning feed is still really normal and very possibly genuine hunger, especially if he takes a FULL feed and goes back to sleep. A habit feed is usually a quick snack/comfort and fussing. A full feed at 4:50 sounds like real hunger to me.

The tell for us was: when it became habit, he'd take 2 minutes and just want the comfort/back to sleep, not actually drink much. A full feed = body needs it. I'd honestly keep it for now, plenty of 6 month olds still need an early feed.

If you want to test it gently, you could try settling him without the feed when he wakes (rock, shush, dummy) and see if he resettles or genuinely needs to eat. If he won't settle without it, it's hunger. We did this around 7 months and ours actually needed it.

Watch the 4:50 timing because that 'split night' early feed can sometimes turn into an early WAKE if you're not careful. Feeding in near-total dark, no chat, no lights, kept ours from thinking it was morning. Sounds like you're doing that already since he goes back to 7.

Honestly if he's sleeping 7-to-4:50 then feeding and back to 7, that's a pretty good night for 6 months! I wouldn't be in a rush to cut it. Plenty of time to drop the early feed later when solids really ramp up. You're doing great.
