White noise - too loud? too long? I overthink everything

We use a white noise machine for naps and overnight for our 6 month old, set to a steady shushing sound. I've read it shouldn't be too loud or right next to the cot, but how loud is too loud and should I turn it off once she's asleep?

Also do babies become dependent on it? I don't want to be hauling this thing on holiday forever.

Rule of thumb I was given: keep it around the volume of a soft shower, across the room from the cot not right beside her head. We leave ours on all night because it masks the dog and the neighbours. No regrets.

Dependent? A bit, but it's a portable habit. We travel with a phone app version so it's not like lugging the machine. Way easier to recreate than, say, a specific room. I wouldn't worry about that part.

We leave it on the whole night on purpose, it bridges her sleep cycles so she doesn't startle at every noise. Turning it off mid-sleep actually woke ours. Continuous low and steady is the way for us.

Phones have a decibel app, check it from where she sleeps. We aimed for the lower end. Honestly the consistency matters more than the exact level, just keep it gentle and across the room.
