Newborn grunts and squirms all night, is this normal?

My son is 3 weeks old and he makes the WILDEST noises in his sleep. Grunting, straining like he's lifting weights, little squeaks, sometimes he goes red in the face. It's constant from about midnight to 4am and it keeps me awake even when he's technically asleep.
He's gaining well and feeds great. Just want to know if other newborns are this loud or if I should mention it to the doctor.

Welcome to the 'noisy newborn' club, ha. Mine sounded like a tiny farm animal for the first two months. It's mostly their immature digestive system and them figuring out how to poop. Totally normal but exhausting because you hear EVERYTHING.

Honestly this is so common it has a name people throw around, 'grunting baby syndrome.' The straining and red face is usually them learning to coordinate pooping while lying down. That said, if anything feels off to you, a quick check-in with your pediatrician is always worth it for peace of mind.

What helped my sleep specifically: putting his bassinet a tiny bit further from my bed (still room-sharing) so the little grunts didn't startle me awake every time. White noise on my side helped mask the squeaks too.

Does it seem like he's in pain or just noisy? Big difference. Noisy + gaining + feeding well usually = normal. Pain, arching, refusing feeds, that's a doctor call. Sounds like yours is just a grunter but trust your gut.

Mine did this and I was convinced something was wrong. Pediatrician basically laughed (kindly) and said it's classic 3-week-old stuff. It faded around 8 weeks for us. Earplugs for one ear saved my sanity in the meantime.
