A child's sleep consists of three stages:
Stage 1
5 - 15 minutes: the stage of falling asleep or superficial sleep.
Stage 2
20 - 60 minutes: medium and deep sleep. During this stage growth hormone is produced, strength is regained, mood is stabilized, the immune system is strengthened, and memory is improved).
Stage 3
5 - 30 minutes: light sleep. During this stage the gained knowledge is structured, stress hormone levels lower, and new learned skills are processed. The child can stand up in the crib or get up on all fours during this stage but still continue to sleep.
After the third phase the child wakes up. If he or she knows how to fall asleep on his or her own, a child, like an adult, may not even notice that he or she is awake. But if a baby does not know how to fall asleep on his or her own in the bed because he or she got used to falling asleep elsewhere or while suckling, a baby will cry and call for help to get back to the previous conditions to which he or she is used to.
