  1. Separate breastfeeding from sleep.
  2. Comfortable conditions for sleep.
  3. Take away the fear of the crib. In order to do this you first need to introduce your baby to the crib. Make it clear that it is safe, that it is good and comfortable to sleep in. A favorite toy will help to love the crib. It should be small, the size of an adult's palm and not contain dangerous items (buttons, small parts that can be ripped off). This toy will "bring" the baby pleasant surprises after he/she woke up (something delicious that the child likes, some objects or toys, stickers that can then be glued to the crib, books, coloring books, etc.). It is important that the baby likes the crib and that it evokes pleasant feelings and is interesting to him or her.
  4. Never try to force a child into bed. Try to keep an infant interested. Draw attention of the baby to a favorite toy lying in the crib, stickers on the back of the crib, which brought the favorite toy. Offer to go down into the crib and look at what is painted on. It is better to choose stickers according to the child's interests (cars, animals, dolls, flowers).

Getting accustomed to the crib in steps:

  1. A restful awake time 1-2 hours before sleep.
  2. Feed your baby 30-40 minutes before bedtime + breastfeeding. The baby should definitely be full.
  3. Do bedtime routine before going to bed.
  4. The last ritual is moving a child to the crib.
  5. Sleep.

Example:

18:30 - 19:00. Bathing.

19:00 - 19:30. Dinner + breastfeeding.

19:30 - 19:50. The bedtime routine: play puzzles, look at the pictures in a book, etc.

19:50 - 20:00. Last rituals before bedtime. Look out the window, say goodnight to everyone, close the curtains or blinds, walk around the room holding the baby upright in your arms and sing a lullaby, turn on white noise, give a pacifier (use until the baby falls into a deep sleep). When the baby is relaxed, move him or her to the crib, but leave your hands on the baby's body, as if continuing to hold an infant. You can lean your face right up against the mattress, letting him or her know that mom is there.

20:10. Sleep.

  • If the baby immediately starts to cry a lot after being put in the crib, then take him or her in your arms and quickly distract an infant with something (noise of water from the faucet, turn on the kitchen hood, blink the light, bring him or her to the window and tap on the glass). Try to avoid temper tantrums. When the child is distracted from crying heavily, begin to calm him or her, saying that everything is fine, that mom is nearby, mom loves him or her. Be sure to say all this out loud. Be affectionate and calm.
  • You can use sleep assistants: white noise, pacifier, stroking, lullabies - until the baby goes into a deep sleep.
  • If the baby cries a lot, rock him or her the way he or she is used to, then in an upright position.
  • Gradually decrease the amplitude of the movements.
  • Making stops between rocking.
  • Watch your baby's reaction.
  • When the baby calms down, then stop rocking and just keep upright in your arms and walk around the room.
  • If the baby continues to be quiet, then stop at the crib and just hold him or her in your arms.
  • Avoid falling asleep during rocking.
  • Put your baby in the crib while he or she is awake. Periodically try to get him or her interested in the crib. Draw attention to a toy in the bed or to stickers. The baby should reach for the bed or side rail. Or he or she should not mind if mom tries to put him in bed.
  • When the child agrees to go to bed, then after putting him or her down again, stay close to him or her and do not take your hands away, continue to keep your hands on his or her body. You can lightly stroke it. If the baby cries a lot again, take him/her in your arms and repeat the same step by step. Do this until he or she agrees to fall asleep on his or her own in the crib.
  • If the baby does calm down and agrees to lie down in the crib, continue to keep your hands on his or her body. Lean toward him or her. If he remains calm and his or her breathing is even then slowly remove one hand and continue to hold or stroke with the other. Slip your free hand between the bars of the crib and start stroking or touching the baby again. Gently remove the other hand. Now you can sit next to the crib and stroke the hand slipped between the bars of the crib. If the baby is calm, then stop stroking it and just stay close by. The baby can crawl on the bed, play, call for mom, but if he or she is not crying, then do nothing and just sit next to the crib. Sometimes you can pat the mattress with your hand and tell him or her that it's time to go to sleep, urging her to lie down. Wait for the baby to fall asleep.
  • It is important to act lovingly, in the same way, consistently and confidently every time. Let the child know that everything is okay and he or she is safe.
  • !!! Never shake the baby. See “Shaken Baby Syndrome”.
  • Do not force your baby into the crib, otherwise he or she will be frightened and have a tantrum. The child will become afraid of the bed. Try to keep the baby interested. Attract attention with a favorite toy lying in the crib, stickers on the back of the crib, which brought the favorite toy. Offer to go down into the crib and see what they are painted on. It is better to choose stickers according to the child's interests (cars, animals, dolls, flowers).
  • It is better to start learning to sleep in the crib before bedtime, when the child is as tired as possible for the day, has had a good and quality time with his or her mom, he or she is full and wants to sleep.
  • Most often, when the baby learns to fall asleep independently in the crib for a night's sleep, the day's sleep will normalize on its own.
  • For daytime naps, the baby should be put to bed according to the same principle as for a nighttime nap. You can introduce one separate ritual for daytime sleep only, and one for nighttime sleep only.
  • On the second or third day of training it may seem that it only gets worse. This day should be overcome and the next day you will see a shift for the better. The child will wake up noticeably less often or even sleep through the night.

Mistakes

  • There are no more or less important points in the training. It is equally important to follow them all.
  • You must be prepared for the child to resist. Parents must have enough strength to calm the child when he or she demands the conditions he or she is accustomed to. Otherwise, if parents do what the child asks, an infant will realize that it is possible to achieve his or her goal, he or she just needs to cry even longer and louder.
